As we mark 100 years of the Witte\, we also honor the woman who started it all\, Ellen Quillin\, alongside the many women who have helped highlight Texas’s landscapes and wildlife. Hear from Jennifer Bristol\, author of Wild Women for Good: Stories of Conservation in Texas\, and Helen Holdsworth\, curator of the McLean Family Texas Wild Gallery and Director of Stewardship Education\, as they share stories of the wild women who have protected the state’s landscapes and wildlife. \nFollowing a guided gallery experience\, you will participate in a hands-on watercolor session with featured artist Alicia McAllen. Wild Women for Good brings these powerful stories to life\, highlighting more than sixty women and groups whose work strengthened communities and protected the landscapes we treasure today. \nSpanning 150 years of history\, the book explores the earliest conservation efforts in Texas\, including the movement to stop the millinery industry’s slaughter of birds for plumage. Bristol also examines the women who championed the creation of the state park system\, defended water systems from pollution\, and dedicated private lands for public good in a state where 94 percent of land is privately owned. SUMMARY:Rock Art Tours: Bonfire Shelter & Eagle Cave Tour
DESCRIPTION:Experience the amazing rock shelters located in Eagle Nest Canyon. \nOn this tour\, you will visit Eagle Cave\, Skiles Shelter\, Kelley Cave and Bonfire Shelter.  Bonfire Shelter is a nationally significant site that preserves evidence of what may be the oldest and southernmost “bison jump” in North America.  Rock art in Eagle Cave has been radiocarbon dated between 3350-3210 years old.  Combined these sites contain evidence of human occupation spanning over 12\,000 years. \nThe Witte Museum thanks the landowners for their stewardship of this unique cultural resource and for graciously providing access. \nMore about the White Shaman Preserve and Rock Art Tours. \nHealth + Safety: Participants must be aware of the remote and extreme environmental conditions and terrain into which the tour travels.  At any time of the year\, desert heat can be extreme.  Desert hikes require stamina\, balance\, a tolerance for heat and a higher level of physical conditioning. DESCRIPTION:Join the Witte Museum for a hiking tour to the Halo Shelter! \nLocated in a tributary near the pristine Devils River north of Comstock\, Halo Shelter features some of the best preserved Pecos River style pictographs in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands archaeological district. The complex hundred-foot mural has been radiocarbon dated to be 2\,000 years old and features over 100 anthropomorphic figures intermixed with enigmatic and animalistic icons. The site gets its name from the unique “halos” that are painted above the heads of several anthropomorphic\, or human-like figures. \nThe Witte Museum thanks the landowners for their stewardship of this unique cultural resource and for graciously providing access. \nMore about the White Shaman Preserve and Rock Art Tours. \nPricing: \n\nMembers: $70\nNon-members: $80\n\n \nTour Difficulty: Moderate hike.  Getting to the site requires descending and ascending into a steep canyon with the use of a rope.  Participants must be prepared for this challenging requirement.  Gloves are recommended. \nDuration: 6-7 hours \nRound-trip Distance: ¼ of a mile hike. \nHealth + Safety:Participants must be aware of the remote and extreme environmental conditions and terrain into which the tour travels.  At any time of the year\, desert heat can be extreme.  Desert hikes require stamina\, balance\, a tolerance for heat and a higher level of physical conditioning.
