Join our Witte educators and discover how the People of the Pecos used the natural resources around them to hunt. \n10:30 a.m. \nFangtastic! – SWBC Live Lab\nThink you could tell the difference between a venomous and a poisonous snake? In this demonstration\, compare 3-D printed snake fangs to discover how snakes around the world catch their prey. Learn about the functions of fangs and the power of poison! \nChuckbox Cuisine – Will Smith Amphitheater\nFind out who the “Bean Wrangler” is and what he might carry in his chuckbox on long trail drives across North America. Would you have what it takes to do this important job? \n11 a.m. \nStorytime – John R. and Greli N. SUMMARY:Rock Art Tours: Running Deer Shelter
DESCRIPTION:Join the Witte Museum for a hiking tour to the Running Deer Shelter! \nThis rare opportunity offers access to an extraordinary rock art site that has been inaccessible for several years. Tucked deep within a canyon near Halo Shelter and the Devils River\, Running Deer features striking Pecos River style pictographs\, including a series of deer that appear to move across the rock wall. Explore this remarkable site and step into a story preserved on stone for centuries. \nThe Witte Museum thanks the landowners for their stewardship of this unique cultural resource and for graciously providing access. \nMore about the White Shaman Preserve and Rock Art Tours. \nPricing: \n\nMembers: $70\nNon-members: $80\n\nTour Difficulty: Very strenuous.  This hike is through a very steep and rough canyon with deep loose rock and undefined trail.  Accessing the site requires knee to chest climbs and crab walking to safely traverse short drops.  Stamina\, agility and good balance are a must.  Participants must be prepared and physically conditioned for this challenging requirement. \nDuration: 5 hours \nRound-trip Distance: 1.7 miles round trip \nHealth + Safety:Participants must be aware of the remote and extreme environmental conditions and terrain into which the tour travels.  At any time of the year\, desert heat can be extreme.  Desert hikes require stamina\, balance\, a tolerance for heat and a higher level of physical conditioning. You will be in a remote location where response to serious injuries and medical emergencies will be difficult and lengthy. \nVehicle Requirements: High clearance 4WD vehicle required\, you will be traveling on rough unpaved ranch roads. \nLocation: Private Ranch near Comstock\, Texas \nReservations are required and spaces are limited. Participants must be ages 12 & up. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
