You’ll think like a paleontologist as you solve your own fossil puzzle. \nPlus\, you’ll have the opportunity to meet paleontologist Dr. Thomas Adams\, Vice President of Research and Chief Curator at the Witte Museum! \nImportant Information: \n\nAdditional fee and advance registration required for event. DESCRIPTION:Journey deep into the rugged Lower Pecos Canyonlands to experience the White Shaman mural\, considered one of the most cosmologically complex narratives in the world\, at the Witte Museum’s White Shaman Preserve.  \nLocated near Seminole Canyon State Park\, this 1.5-hour trek takes you through a landscape filled with Chihuahuan Desert plants and stunning views of the Pecos River where it converges with the Rio Grande. The White Shaman mural\, painted thousands of years ago\, illustrates the lifeway and belief systems of the now-gone hunter-gatherer society. \nMore about the White Shaman Preserve and the Witte. \nPricing: \n\nMembers: $15\nNon-Members: $25\n\nTour Difficulty: (Strenuous) There is a 250-foot descent into a narrow brushy canyon and the trail is steep with loose rocks and uneven footing. SUMMARY:Rock Art Tours: Meyers Spring Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, Meyers Spring is considered one of the “must see” rock art sites in Texas. The Spring serves as a major source of water in the dry West Texas climate and has been at the center of human activity for thousands of years. \nThe stunning rock art found here includes paintings in the Pecos River style left by ancient people. On top of those older paintings\, Indigenous artists recorded images of European contact. And still later\, Seminole Scouts and local ranchers left their marks. \nThis site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and today is privately owned. The Witte Museum thanks the landowners for their stewardship of this unique cultural resource and for graciously providing access. \nLocated near Dryden\, Texas\, the Meyers Spring site features a 100 ft. long prehistoric and historic rock art panel near the spring and the site of historic Camp Meyers\, a western outpost of the Black Seminole Scouts assigned to Fort Clark in Brackettville during the late 1800s. \nMore about the White Shaman Preserve and Rock Art Tours. \nPricing: \n\nMembers: $35\nNon-members: $50\n\nTour Difficulty: (Easy) The site is 9 miles by dirt road followed by a short walk on defined trails of loose rock and uneven terrain. Hear about the complex logistics necessary to access these camps\, collect samples\, and ship specimens like the ones found in Antarctic Dinosaurs! \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \nDr. Peter Flaig is a Research Scientist and Sedimentologist-Stratigrapher at the Bureau of Economic Geology\, University of Texas at Austin. His job includes examining deposits such as those that surround dinosaur bones\, as well as the plants and other animals found alongside them. His goal is to help other scientists reconstruct ancient\, deep-time environments. \nDr. Flaig was fortunate enough to be a part of a separate research team based in the same remote Beardmore Field Camp as the team that found the specimens for Antarctic Dinosaurs! SUMMARY:Conference on Texas - Ode to Juneteenth: Slavery in Texas
DESCRIPTION:DECEMBER 5 – 6\, 2024  |  Slavery was foundational to the formation and growth of Texas. Ode to Juneteenth: Slavery in Texas will broaden our understanding of the ongoing legacies of slavery in Texas. \nThe 2024 Conference on Texas at the Witte Museum will reveal the foundational role of chattel slavery in the formation and growth of Texas. This 2-day museum-wide conference is led by a Steering Committee chaired by Aaronetta Pierce\, who will curate panel discussions featuring scholars from around the United States focusing on slavery in Texas\, including Dr. Daina Ramey Berry and with a keynote address from Annette Gordon-Reed\, MacArthur Genius and the first Black person to win the Pulitzer Prize in History. Through new scholarship\, the conference will broaden our understanding of the ongoing legacies of slavery\, which continue to impact African Americans in Texas. \nThe conference will center on the lives of the enslaved people\, especially as mothers\, fathers\, sisters\, and brothers. \nEvery facet of the expanding Texas economy was impacted by slavery and enslaved labor. Enslaved people not only labored on cotton and sugar plantations\, they also worked as artisans such as blacksmiths\, seamstresses\, and as enslaved cowboys. \nIn 1834\, there were approximately 5\,000 enslaved people in Mexican Texas. During the Republic of Texas\, slavery increased so that by 1845\, there were at least 30\,000 enslaved women\, men and children in the new state of Texas. When Texas voted to join the Confederacy in 1861\, the enslaved population was 182\,566 people\, the fastest growing demographic in Texas. She is currently the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and a professor of history in the university’s Faculty of Arts & Sciences. Gordon-Reed won sixteen book prizes\, including the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 and the National Book Award in 2008\, for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family. Her most recent book\, On Juneteenth\, provides a historian’s view of the country’s long road to Juneteenth\, recounting both its origins in Texas and the enormous hardships that African-Americans have endured in the century since\, from Reconstruction through Jim Crow and beyond.

The group is known for many jazz styles\, specializing in the American songbook of composers such as Duke Ellington\, The Gershwins\, Louis Armstrong\, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter. \nJazz is in Aaron Prado’s DNA\, and it’s not hard to tell as he works his piano alongside bassist George Prado and drummer Brandon Guerra. Witnessing Prado is an international exploration in the jazz movement- from swing classics to boleros\, be-bop to European avant-garde- always defined by deft musician and imagination. \nPresented in partnership with Trinity University’s KRTU Jazz 91.7.
